Snow in DEN! (EDITED TO INCLUDE CITATION)

Good Evening Everyone,

I'd like to start by wishing everyone a very Happy New Year! Well it is snowing in Denver and crazy weather has been occurring all over the country. Delta and American's completion factor for the month of December was 92% and 89% respectively. Most of those cancelled flights were due to the snow storms up and down the eastern seaboard. Republic saw a total of 800 cancelled flights due to the snowstorm in the east, 700 of which were contract operations the remaining 100 were Frontier flights. That, combined with the ever increasing cost of oil ($90 for a barrel of crude as of today) means that Frontier will lose money from the month of December. You can appreciate that allow the snow is good for Denver, its not so good for Frontier. Next year will be very tough, but I am confident that we have never been in a better position to combat the challenges we face. (It has been brought to my attention that the sources behind this were not properly cited, much of the analysis has comes from Bryan Bedford & Republic Airways Inc. Other analysis is a compilation of knowledge through several things that I have read recently - the WSJ & Fox Business come to mind, thanks to all who contributed).

Well thats all for now - I wish you all blessings as the new year rolls around.

Writers Block

Good Evening Everyone,

As you are undoubtably aware it has been a while since I have updated this blog - I have been on the road a lot, working a lot and spending much time around family and friends. On that note, I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I began the month in Cedar Rapids, Iowa - traveled back to San Francisco, Denver, Newport, Goodland and the Rocky mountains (skiing and snow!) - I believe I am missing one place, but my mind is blank.

Anyhow for the important things. About a month ago, at a severe moment of weakness I very seriously considered giving up this book, it seemed so crazy (and in many ways still does). But then I sat down and spoke to a few people (Andrea Grant - thank you) who really reminded me why I am writing it. The bottom line, I am continuing and working harder than ever to find interviews. Next week I am off to New York to interview the CFO of private equity at Blackstone, and a managing director at Protiviti (a division of Robert Half International), and hopefully VP of Marketing at JetBlue Airways (keep your fingers crossed for that one). The following week I am off to Orlando, where I will hopefully interview a representative from Disney and potentially meet some key figures in the NAHB (National Association of Home Builders). I am still working on a number of contacts - and hope to have updates from Frontier Airlines, LRS, and Marsico Funds soon!

Well thanks for staying tuned, we'll talked to you soon!

Rainy with a chance of Christmas

Well it must be Christmas time in San Francisco! Yup, the rain is here and I know its about as close to snow as I am going to get (which reminds me of the Colorado Christmas season). Anyway, I hope everyone had a safe and restful Thanksgiving. As with every year, I travelled to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for Thanksgiving this year, where I was away from internet access and in a place where I could sleep late (much too late) and enjoy the company of my family. I am so blessed to have great family and friends, and Thanksgiving reminded me how grateful I need to be for that. Anyway, part of my reason for not writing last week was because I was without internet for most of the week, my excuse for not writing until now this week is much more feeble. I have been absolutely slammed with work. The good news is that some of that work translates to very good things for the book. As of right now, I have firmed up an interview with Young Americans Bank (for entrepreneurship development), JetBlue Airways, and Erin Gruwell (not to mention the already completed interviews). Additionally, I am hopeful that the following companies & people will return with a positive response: FedEx (Fred Smith), Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, LRS (Levi, Ray & Schoup), Southwest Airlines, Disney's Imagineering Department, Tom Marsico, and Erin Brockovich.

Okay - well thank you for your patients, I promise as soon as I know more I'll keep everyone updated.

Blessings and prayers with you as you venture forth into the holiday season.

Best,

Matt

Vegas Tonight

Tonight, I am sitting in the Las Vegas Airport (LAS), awaiting an Airbus that will carry me to somewhere far east of here. Adjacent to me is an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 that was just burning a great deal of jet-fuel (it smelled wonderful, put be back into memory of what flying is really like). This airport is decimate, its sad, empty, at the end of the day, it just seems gloomy and tired.

The good news is, I am back in the air - on the way to Chicago (ORD) from here. Now most of you will (for good reason), associate O'Hare with horrid weather delays, obnoxious numbers of holiday travelers, and just a not so nice place to be this time of year. I must be nuts to say this, but it has a certain place in my heart this time of year, it reminds me of my roots - heartland U.S., back when I was very very young taking my first flights (most of them on United, and often through Chicago), but its good :)

Well, with regard to the book, I'm going to be honest, I did not actually do anything to work on it today (sorry!!), I was swamped and have been in transit from them. Tomorrow, I will arrive into Cedar Rapids early and should have a good opportunity to work on the book.

Wish you all the best - safe and happy travels to you all, I'll talk to you soon.

Good Night

Good Evening Everyone,

I apologize for not writing on either Thursday or Friday nights. I have been very busy lately (ever feel like your incredibly busy, but you can't figure out what you've been busy with? Yeah thats me). Okay, well then - here goes.

Alright, so I began making contacts like crazy - just cold calling on Friday (unfortunately it was the Friday before Thanksgiving week, which means that almost everyone was away from their desk and I'm not optimistic about any responses until the first week of December). So here is where I am at: Made a call to a contact in the Entrepreneurship Development department at the Young Americans Bank. They have been very instrumental in influencing young entrepreneurship growth and development and I love the idea. They are revolutionary in that they don't feel like anyone is too young to be thinking about great new business ideas that can work to improve the world. I once had the opportunity to meet Sam Addoms (founder of Frontier Airlines, AKA one of my absolute favorite companies of all time - for personal reasons), yeah I'm still trying to get back in contact with him for the book - kicking myself for not keeping his contact info. Anyway, I then directed a call toward's Southwest Airlines in Texas, unfortunately they were closed so I'll try again on Monday. The remainder of my contacts are east coast based, so it was too late to get to them on Friday, so stay tuned for Monday.

Its the holiday week, many people are traveling - so I'll keep you posted, but I imagine most people just want to enjoy the week with their family. More power to you guys - everyone has been working very hard lately - enjoy.

I meanwhile will be trying to navigate my way back to Cedar Rapids, IA this week via Chicago :) Talk about a challenge - I must be nuts (for those of you that work in the airline industry - you know exactly why trying to fly from SFO-ORD-CID a day before thanksgiving on United & American is a tall order a best)!

Thanks everyone - I'll update soon when exciting things happen again.

FedEx - Flying the Graveyard Shift

Good Evening Everyone,

Well - let me start by explaining the title, I have been reading bios of inspirational companies, and one of them is Federal Express (FedEx). FedEx is unique in that it is one of the largest aircraft operators in the world, but one of the only that operates a HUGE majority at night (~80% to be exact). So, as I sit here writing at 2:34 AM, I am reminded of all of the FedEx pilots crossing the world tonight, it just seems right somehow.

Okay, then onto the book, today was very busy - I was practically going nonstop from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM tonight, then homework! But, at work today I had some extra time, so I started networking - here's the added list of companies I'm prospecting moving forward:
-Dick Levi (LRS)
-Fred De Luca (Subway)
-Frederick Smith (FedEx Founder)
-Capt. Sully Sullenberger (Capt. aboard US Airways 1549 - Hudson River crash)
-US Air Corp. (Doug Parker - former Finance Chief)

So, on a different but related note, I have good news in the possible contacts at Frontier Airlines/RJET. My mother met the flight attendant on Undercover Boss (the Frontier edition), and he was coming from a meeting with Ian Arthur - they have been incredibly swamped over at Frontier, but things may start settling down and we may have some possiblities moving forward.

Good night all, I'll have a more detailed report tomorrow!

Best,

Matt

ACTION REQUEST!! Flibbertigibbet (me last night)

Good Evening Everyone,

Okay, I admit I really didn't know what to write in the subject line - but flibbertigibbet seemed appropriate to my mood for today.... For those of you who don't actually know what that word means, the Oxford New English Dictionary says this, "A frivolous, flighty, or excessively talkative person". I think that I wrote an obscenely long post lat night, thus tonights is short and sweet :)

Oober quick book update:
Right well, I sent one more letter today to Daniel Shurz, director of strategy and development for Frontier Airlines. I also updated my linkedin profile (please connect with me if you have one) to add some credibility to this (and other) project(s), and started compiling a list of people to call in the morning (so far I have four phone calls to make). Okay, I know I had something else to update y'all on but I just don't remember what that was.... hmmm could be excessive amounts of caffeine, a lack of sleep - 3 hours to be exact, the Econ midterm & rhetoric essay I had due today (or more likely a combination of the above - I'm totally fine, so don't be concerned (as if you were), just losing it a bit more than usual.... yes that is possible).

NEED YOUR HELP, PLEASE!!!

Okay Folks, I really really really need your input! I need suggestions on those revolutionary and extraordinary people & companies in YOUR life. I have a really good start and am pursuing several opportunities, but I really could use your advice so please either comment below, send me a facebook message (or wall post) or good old fashion email and telephone calls are the best (YES, both of those still exist). If you really want, you can fax me your suggestions*
*Faxing option available only to those over the age of 30, because I don't think anyone in my generation knows what a fax machine does :-)

Alright, well once again, thank you sooo much for reading this blog! I apologize about all of the super cheesy humor (I have to entertain myself too). Maybe I'll post a picture on here tomorrow night that could help keep things fresh.

Take Care Everyone - Best,

Matt

The Cross Stands as the World Spins

Good Evening Everyone,

"The cross stands as the whole world spins" was a common phrase used by monks many years ago, I'd like you to keep the phrase in mind as you read the rest of today's post. Two very significant things happened this weekend (with regard to the book), the first was an excellent opportunity to interview someone who has overcome a great deal to become successful.

On Saturday, I flew from San Carlos Airport (SQL) to Livermore (LVK) with Mr. Bob Wood, a former United Airlines Flight Attendant & Actor (among many other things). Over lunch at Beeb's Restaurant in Livermore, I got to chat with Bob about his past and the things that have motivated him to find success in his life. But I'd better explain why I wanted to interview Bob in the first place; we had talked about why Bob became a flight attendant, as apposed to a pilot. Well, in high school and into college, Bob still cherished an ambition to become a military, then commercial airline pilot. He even received an appointment to the Air Force Academy, but was told that he did not meet the physical requirements because of his inability to see colors (colorblindness). I imagined that for Bob the blow would have been incredibly devastating, but as Bob said, it was difficult, but his life was far from over - the question was not, "my life is over-what on earth am I going to do?" instead it was, "Okay, that was a setback, but where can I go from here?". Well the "from here" happened to lead him to air traffic control school, and through a fascinating series of events to become a 27 year flight attendant for United Airlines and more recently an actor, acting instructor, and flight instructor. (Sorry its late and you'll get a more detailed description of Bob's story when the book is complete). What to take away from this interview: I believe that the most relevant advice Bob gave was simply, "accept that success may look different than you originally thought it would," and that, "the most valuable times of your life come about during the journey, not the arrival." The last and most important bit was about faith, and although Bob and I may not share the same denomination, we both agree on this point, "Success cannot be achieved unless one has faith and passion for that which he/she is attempting to be successful."

On Sunday night, the student mass at school was held in remembrance of the Jesuit Martyrs that were killed on November 16, 1989 (in El Salvador) for standing up for Christ and representing their beliefs. Their passion and love for Christ is incredibly admirable, and is a true demonstration of those that understand what God calls us to do for His word. I don't know why it affected me so greatly, but it seems like this story exemplified all of the traits Bob and I discussed: Obviously the jesuits had passion and faith, so strong they were willing to die in the service of God. They further demonstrated the understanding that the greatest success can sometimes come from some of the absolute worse scenarios: Jesus died on the cross at our hands, the hands of humans, and yet He loves us all so much, we are successful when we remember that He is our guiding light and that our lives depend upon our faith and trust in Him.

-I know that many of my friends are not Catholic or even Christian, and I can only tell you this. I can never satisfactorily explain to you the feeling I receive when I accept Him into my life, I can only offer you what I know. I have never felt more deeply inspired by anyone or anything, we are all sinners, and we are offered the opportunity to love God and accept him or not - I chose to accept Him into my life after my Grandma Sally passed away because I recognized that passion she had for His word; while battling a brain tumor for more than five years, she did not resent Him, rather she accepted and worshipped Him more than ever before. She had been called to serve Him and while it is an awful shame we didn't get to spend more time together, I know that She is sitting with Him, praying for all of us (Lord knows we need it). I speak only for myself, for I cannot guarantee anything - but if your on the edge I say this, take the plunge, jump in and don't look back, you'll never regret it.

Its 2:41 AM in California (thats 3:41 AM in Denver, and 5:41 AM in New York, yikes!) and I have an 8:00 AM class, so good night everyone, I wish you all the best.

Blessings in Christ, Talk to you soon,

Matt

Happy Weekend!

Good Evening Everyone,

May I start off by saying thank you to all of the followers, hopefully I'm not boring you too much :) Right well to the juicy news! Today was very busy, but I did manage to find a couple of new prospects (nope I haven't heard back from any of the people I wrote to yet, but I find people like to take an average of about 2 weeks, so I'm not worried). Okay, the first is Mr. Dick Levi of Levi, Ray and Shoup (LRS). Mr. Levi started LRS (which is a mainframe computer and advanced technology firm) with two partners in the 1980s. Since then, the company has grown and diversified a tremendous amount. Last summer, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Levi and what struck me most about him was that his work really doesn't feel like work! He absolutely loves what he does and as a result, that is what he spends the most time doing. The second is Subway founder Fred De Luca, Mr. De Luca founded Subway because he was looking for a way to fund his college career. The result is a multi-billion dollar franchise with 35,000 stores (the second largest restaurant chain in the world, yes its larger than McDonalds). I will begin writing letters to both of these amazing people this weekend or early next week, but thats next up on the radar screen.

I want to leave this weekend with the following thought:
Yesterday I heard from a friend (and fellow aviator) that attends the Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) about a plane crash in south Florida containing fellow aviation students from FIT. It reminded me to think about our lives and to do everything we can to live in the moment. This moment will indeed be over very soon, adios, see ya later, its gone. Every breath, every second is a gift from God and I intend to take full advantage of that gift. I'm writing a book that has about a one in a million chance of succeeding, but what is the point of living if we're not going to take risks? We're given one life, we make our choices, we can either find happiness and pursue the things that we are most passionate about or we can not - I'm choosing option A, because I recently realized that the risk of failing a million times is worth that one time that we actually succeed. If I inspired or brightened one person's day today, it was a day worth living. The point: love God and love your family & friends because our time is short - I'm 18, with hopefully a good 80 years in front of me, but I know also that those 18 years have already flown by, why should the other 80 be any different? Take Care everyone, and celebrate life this weekend - call someone you wouldn't normally, take your kids to the park just so you can enjoy the fresh air & their company, and even smile at that obnoxious neighbor who keeps his music on until 3:00 AM :)

You all inspire me everyday, not by doing revolutionary things necessarily, but by being you - have a great weekend and know that today I'm thinking about all of the incredible people that have influenced my life (which is probably you if your reading this :-)

In Him,

Matt

Another Busy Day in SFO

Hi Everyone,

Busy, busy, busy!! Well, I'm not sure about y'all but I think with all the stress this time of year (isn't it pretty much all year?!), anyway - figured you could use some humor so before I jump into the book here's a joke for you:
A 15 year old kid was getting beat by his parents, so he took them to court and the judge said, "I guess you have to go live with your grandparents." The kid replied, "you can't send me to them, they beat me worse than my parents!!" The judge asked,"What am I gonna do with you?" The kid replied, "send me to the Broncos, they can't beat anybody!!"
-BTW, just because I live in CA - I'm still a Broncos fan, admittedly we have had some bad luck lately.... thanks to Don, a good friend and painter for the joke!

Okay - down to biz eee ness (its 1:43 AM on Friday, I'm allowed to be crazy),
Today, got a couple new emails sent off for the book, I have secured an interview with Mr. Bob Wood (tomorrow Saturday) and plan to speak with Bob about how he faced and overcame adversity in his life. Bob's story is extremely fascinating, starting at a very young age he cherished an ambition (passion & love) for flying. Bob always planned to become an airline pilot and had completed his Private Pilot certificate when he was offered a spot at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Bob's dreams were shattered when it was discovered that he was colorblind and the result was that Bob had to look for other passions - he is not bitter or unhappy, on the contrary he loved his career(s) as a flight attendant for United and actor. But it is precisely his ability to move on and take a positive attitude that fascinates me about his story.

Well, sorry folks - there are many errors in this post I'm sure, but I am exhausted so as they say "Hasta La Vista" Take care, until manana.

ideas!!

Good evening/morning/whatever everyone,

It is 1:12 AM in California, so I guess that means its still evening in Hawaii - okay I'm off my ADD tangent - about the project. I have begun writing a couple of letters: one is to Ian Arthur (VP of Marketing at Frontier Airlines), the other is to Matt from "Where the Hell is Matt?" (check out his videos on youtube, just type in Where the Hell is Matt). Not a super exciting update for the progress of the book - but a good friend of mine pointed out that I didn't really answer this question in my first blog post (which incidentally is where you can find more general info about the project if your interested):

Why am I writing this book?
Well Kelly, I originally started thinking about writing the book when I was bored in the first two weeks of college, wishing I had something to do. Strangely, the more I thought about the concept, the more it frightened me. I thought:
1) I suck at writing - how the hell am I going to make it through an entire book?!
2) Who on God's green earth is going to be interested in reading it?
3) Honestly, what do I have to gain?
So for a while I tossed around the idea - couldn't figure out any answers to the above questions, and finally arrived at the following conclusion: what do I have to loose? The worst that can happen is that only I actually want to read the book, but I'm sure that there is some experience to be gained right?! I began to write, then I realized that my current knowledge base isn't even close to what I needed, so I started writing to those that inspired me, looking for advice and the opportunity to get their perspectives on life. So originally, the book was an excuse to do something and possibly the opportunity to get on an airplane to go see people. It has become an opportunity to meet inspirational people and find the value in life. I have come to love the idea of seeking those that follow their dreams and never look twice - its an exhilarating feeling, never really knowing where your headed, simply risking it all and praying that you'll come out for the better on the other side.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and for stopping by (especially to my -now- four followers! It means alot you guys, so thank you), God Bless,

Matt

A busy day in San Fran

Good Evening Everyone,

Well, I haven't done much writing today - but I did get some email interview questions sent off to Ms. Erin Gruwell of The Freedom Writers Foundation. For those of you who are not familiar with the story of The Freedom Writers, Ms. Gruwell began teaching at Wilson High School in Long Beach around the time of the Rodney King riots. At Wilson, Ms. Gruwell faced much adversity both from the faculty and students. Racial tension between students was at an all time high, yet Ms. Gruwell worked to unify the students - inspiring them to work toward a better life. When Ms. Gruwell petitioned to continue teaching the class that had become a family in their junior and senior years, the schools administration used every possible method to thwart her. Eventually however, the board of education saw the value in Ms. Gruwell's work and she was allowed to continue teaching her students. Ms. Gruwell is a story of inspiration to many and I am absolutely thrilled that she has offered to assist in this project!

Unfortunately, I am out of time - it is raining in San Francisco and I have to finish studying for a business test. Take care everyone.

Where this project all began

In August 2010, I had a rather random idea that I would start writing a book. Thats right, me, perhaps the worst writer in the world, writing a book! Well, I admit when I first began I wasn't sure the project would actually go somewhere and so many times I think about the project and it seems simply impossible, but somehow I still feel like I'm heading the right direction.

So, About the Project:
The book is a compilation of interviews and ideas from extraordinary people that are following their hearts, and achieving their dreams. My job, simply to act as a liaison - piecing together this mysterious puzzle that somehow is supposed to offer guidance on how to achieve your dreams.

What I've done so far:
CONTACT! Well, I have been working extremely hard to make contacts to interview and include in my book, telling as many people as possible about this project and hoping upon hope that someone will have some idea where to go next, who to call next, which dead end can actually lead to something real. I began the project, by interviewing Brett Snyder of the Cranky Flier Blog (you can find his work at www.crankyflier.com), because Brett and I share a similar passion - the airline industry. Brett is very well versed in the industry, and really knows his topics - he is by all means a classic example of a man who has forsaken a normal lifestyle in pursuit of his dreams. As i move forward, I'd love to hear your ideas for people to interview & suggestions on how to further enhance the project.

Why Blog?
Actually, I never planned on writing a blog about this project, then a friend of mine (David Avari) suggested that I begin writing a blog to keep those who are interested posted on the book's progress. Not only does blogging offer some great networking opportunities, I think it is a very good way for me to keep everyone informed about developments.

Well, thats a pretty good summary of the project - I'll actually start writing about the project tomorrow!

Matt
